Pricing
We match you with the right tutor at a fair, transparent price. There are no upfront fees and no registration charges — you only pay after tuition has taken place.
And we certainly do not upsell, if the cheapest option is the best option for your student, that’s what we will recommend.
How payment works
- After each lesson your tutor records the session and raises an invoice automatically through our platform, TutorCruncher.
- After your first lesson you receive an invoice by email with a Pay Now button. Once your card is saved, future lessons are charged automatically 3 days after each session — never in advance.
- Payments are processed securely by Stripe — the same platform used by Apple and Amazon. Your card details are never held by Scotland Tutors.
Tutor types and rate ranges
Our tutors fall into three broad categories, and the right match depends on your child’s level, subject, and goals — Alicja or Joanne will recommend the best fit for your situation.
All of our tutors are vetted to a high standard. An undergraduate tutor at a lower price point can be an excellent choice for many students, while a senior specialist may be the right call where the subject, level, or objectives demand it. Price reflects experience tier, not quality of our matching process.
Timing also affects rates. Demand rises sharply as the Qualifications Scotland (formerly SQA) exams approach in April and May, and prices follow. Families who book in August or September nearly always secure the best available rates for the academic year.
Undergraduate/academic
£[39]–£[55]per hour
High-achieving undergraduates and postgraduates. Well suited to National 5 and Higher.
Qualified teacher/experienced tutor
£[45]–£[65]per hour
Fully qualified, PVG-checked teachers. Suited to all levels including Advanced Higher.
Senior academic / Specialist subjects
£[50]–£[65]per hour
University lecturers and senior specialists. Ideal for Advanced Higher and university entrance.
Don't underestimate undergraduates as an option - they have recently been through the system themselves, are academically excellent, and bring fresh, successful experience of the exams your child is sitting.
All prices are inclusive. The rate we quote is guaranteed for the duration of your tuition - no hidden extras.
Session lengths
There is no minimum number of sessions — but tuition works best as an ongoing programme rather than a one-off. Weekly consistency is what builds confidence and improves grades.
1 hour
Primary level or normal workload — the most popular option (90% choose this option)
1.5 hours
Recommended — better value and better outcomes than 1 hour
2 hours
Intensive / exam season — suits some but not all children
One hour is the most popular choice — around 90% of our clients opt for a weekly one-hour session. It's a practical starting point, and Alicja or Joanne will typically recommend beginning here before moving to 1.5 hours when the need indicates, for example as the exam timetable approaches. We think 1.5 hours strikes the right balance for most students: long enough to cover material properly, short enough to maintain focus. Two hours can work well in the run-up to Qualifications Scotland (formerly SQA) exams, but it isn't the right fit for every child — Alicja or Joanne will advise honestly on whether it's appropriate

Frequently asked questions
- How much will I pay each month?
Costs vary based on session length, frequency, and tutor type. A typical arrangement — 1.5 hours per week with a qualified teacher — works out at around six sessions per month. Alicja or Joanne will give you a clear per-session figure before tuition begins. No hidden fees, no surprises.
- What if the tutor is not the right fit?
We will find you another tutor at no extra cost. Getting the match right is central to what we do — if something is not working, tell Alicja and she will act straight away.
- What if I need to cancel a session?
Please give at least 24 hours’ notice to your tutor. Late cancellations may be charged in full. If you need to pause or stop tuition entirely, just let us know and we will handle the billing accordingly.
- Is my payment information secure?
Yes. All payments go through Stripe, which is certified to the highest level of payment security (PCI DSS Level 1). Scotland Tutors never stores your card details.
- Are there any registration or admin fees?
No. There are no setup fees, no registration charges, and no cancellation penalties. You pay only for the tuition delivered.
- Where does the money go?
We are sometimes asked ‘who gets what’ from the charges made for tuition. Clients want to be sure they are getting value for money and that we are fair in our dealings. To that end we publish from time to time a “Where the money goes” fact sheet. For example in July 2026 as we aproached the end of our financial year we were making a few pence more than £4 on a £40 tuition (10%).
