Chemistry Tuition

Whether you need a private Chemistry tutor at home or online, our tutors build confidence and improve grades

For twenty years our tutors have delivered success based on these three fundamental pillars:

Knowledge

A ‘wide and deep understanding of the syllabus content, is of course the first requirement. Knowledge gaps or a lack of understanding, not only put students at risk in exams but also impact negatively on general confidence in the subject.

Study Skills

The knowledge and skill to organise, prioritise and plan study. Even very smart students can find themselves overwhelmed by the subject and the syllabus, leading to panic, a collapse in confidence and poor results.

Exam Technique

How to answer the questions fully, concisely, to the point and in a way that immediately resonates and pleases the examiners. Top achievers are practised at acing exams, it’s a skill that comes from practice and knowledge.

Tuition is based on the individual needs of each pupil, and a tailored mix of the three pillars designed to meet those needs forms the basis of tuition. For xxample, some students will need to concentrate on improving exam performance, others will need help organising revision and study or in some cases help with elements of the syllabus will also be required.  The right mix will be unique to each individual student.

Chemistry – How an Edinburgh Chemistry Tutor can make a difference

Chemistry is a subject area that many students find particularly challenging, and there is a clear necessity for syllabus teaching that is both engaging and comprehensive. That said additional help from a Chemistry Tutor can make a vital difference to confidence in the subject and the final exam grades achieved.

A Chemistry Tutor aims to support both skills-based and knowledge-based objectives through questioning and discussion, to reiterate and consolidate understanding of work covered in class and ultimately improve exam results.  A Chemistry tutor can effectively explain complex theories, revise difficult formulae and processes, and enable students to recognise the real-life application of what they are learning. This subject has the potential to be highly relevant to young people’s everyday lives, as it teaches them aspects of their own fundamental make-up and that of their environment.

Key Topics

At a basic level, Chemistry students encounter a range of topics, such as Fuels, Hydrocarbons, Acids and Alkalis, Metals, Corrosion, Plastics and Fertilisers. Part of this initial study is also an introduction to the periodic table and some basic principles of chemical reactions. Chemistry tuition can be particularly helpful as students progress onto more challenging units, embellishing, for example, their understanding of Energy to include Enthalpy, Bonding and Electronic Structure. Another illustrative unit might be about Carbon, which covers elements like Nomenclature, Polymers and Structural Formulae. Similarly, Chemical Reactions might be studied in relation to Hess’s law, Equilibrium, Redox reactions and Nuclear Chemistry. As can be seen, increasing the complexity of basic topics allows Chemistry to gradually develop and build on previous knowledge, and this process is advantaged by the specialist advice of a Chemistry tutor.

Important Skills

The skills acquired in Chemistry are also expected to build up gradually, and an Scotland Tutors Chemistry tutor can ensure that a student is capable and confident with these appropriate to their level. The first area is knowledge and understanding of chemical facts, ideas, and their social and industrial application in areas such as medicine, engineering and health science. Candidates must also develop problem-solving skills, such as handling and processing information for accurate presentation on tables and graphs, and the ability to evaluate procedures and draw conclusions. In class, practical abilities will be tested through experimentation, and in Chemistry tuition sessions students can seek help for their investigation reports, which involve describing, presenting, analysing and evaluating data accurately. Finally, it is important that candidates foster an open-minded attitude, recognising different perspectives and the everyday applications of science.

Practical Work

The practical work of Chemistry is worth briefly elaborating, as it is of particular significance in this discipline, not least because it tends to increase stimulation and enjoyment of more theoretical course material. Obviously, an Scotland Tutors Chemistry tutor cannot be present during class experiments but is an extremely valuable resource to students as they reflect and record their experiences in writing. The need to provide evidence of creative and critical thinking, respect for safety procedures, and specific abilities such as hypothesising and controlling variables is often found quite challenging. At advanced levels, a high degree of independence will be expected as candidates become adept in these skills, and Chemistry tuition can ensure such abilities are fully demonstrated.

The absolute best decision!!
We cannot recommend Edinburgh Tutors highly enough!

During the spring break, and at very short notice, we contacted Alicja hoping to find young, knowledgeable tutors who genuinely love teaching and can pass that enthusiasm for learning on to their students. Alicja was incredibly helpful from the very beginning. She recommended several excellent tutors, sent us their CVs so we could make our own choice, and also gave us honest, thoughtful guidance about who she felt would be the best match for our daughter.

The results have been absolutely incredible. After just five weeks of intensive tutoring, our daughter went from an F in Higher Maths to an A, from a C in Higher Chemistry to an A, and from a C in Higher English to an A!

We are completely overjoyed and so grateful to Alicja and the wonderful tutors she matched us with. They did not simply teach the subjects—they helped our daughter gain confidence, understand the material and realise what she was capable of achieving.

Even when it feels as though there is not enough time left before the exams, do not give up. If you have a child who is willing to learn, Edinburgh Tutors will work incredibly hard to find the right tutor and the right match for them.

Thank you so much, Alicja. What you and your tutors achieved in such a short time was truly remarkable!

Scotland Tutors were a brilliant support to my daughter during her Highers. They arranged a Modern Studies tutor who was patient, knowledgable and understanding. He really improved her approach, spent time to increase her understanding and reduced her stress levels massively. She went into the exam feeling calm and confident. I highly recommend this company.

Douglas at Edinburgh Tutors has been an excellent tutor for my son studying NAT 5 physics. His follow up email after the sessions let us know exactly what has been covered and what he will do at the next session and he has also been great at providing extra work for my son to complete in between. I would highly recommend him and Edinburgh Tutors.

Very professional tutoring; excellent administration of payments. I can’t recommend them highly enough. Our son has dyslexia and tutoring has brought on his English skills to allow him to pass Nat 5. Maths tutoring for higher maths was excellent too. Included advice and tips for exam preparation and scoring maximum points in exam environment.

My son failed his Nat 5 physics prelim, so I looked for a tutor through Glasgow Tutors. We received a selection of CV's very promptly, and together we chose Ella Morgan from the selection that we were given. Ella worked over Zoom and Teams with my son, and was always reliable and prompt. She was able to develop a good relationship with him and he never complained about a lesson. I got helpful reports after each session, and the method for paying the company was hassle free. We found out yesterday that he got an A in his exam, so I'm absolutely delighted and think this is 100% down to Ella's help in breaking the course down for him and checking his understanding. We'll definitely be back in touch if necessary for his Higher maths this year. Hopefully Ella has space for us after this review! Thank you, it was all a really positive experience.

Thank you to Melissa, my daughter went from getting a D in her prelim to achieving a B in her Nat 5s! My daughter said she explained more in 1 session than her teacher had in a few months. Highly recommended Melissa.
