Music Tuition
Scotland Tutors provides experienced Music tuition across Scotland for pupils studying National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher. Music combines performing, composing and understanding music, and our expert tutors help pupils build confidence across all three areas.
Music Tuition – How a Tutor Can Make a Difference
Higher and Advanced Higher Music combine practical performance with composing and the detailed aural and theoretical understanding of music concepts, so pupils need strong skills across several very different areas at once. Many pupils are confident performers but find the concepts and literacy side of the course – recognising and naming musical features by ear – much harder to build quickly. For over two decades, Scotland Tutors has helped pupils across Scotland strengthen every strand of the course. Whether a pupil needs focused practice on performing repertoire, help developing and notating a composition, or targeted work on music concepts and aural skills, a one-to-one Music tutor provides personal, structured support.
Performing and Composing
The performing component asks pupils to present a programme of music as a soloist or in a group, on their chosen instrument or voice, developing technical accuracy, tone and musicality to a standard appropriate to their level. The composing component requires pupils to create and develop their own original music, showing skill in using musical ideas, structure and notation. Scotland Tutors’ Music tutors help pupils refine performance pieces to real exam standard and guide the composing process from initial ideas through to a finished, well-structured piece.
Understanding Music and Exam Technique
The understanding music component tests the ability to recognise and identify music concepts, signs and symbols by ear across a wide range of genres and styles, and requires pupils to build genuine aural literacy rather than memorised guesswork. Scotland Tutors’ Music tutors work systematically through concept lists and past listening exams, training the ear and building the confidence needed to identify concepts quickly and accurately under exam conditions.
